Tobias laughed at Jane's victory phrase. "Girly girl be pickin' up on my language! Nice to know homeboy is rubbing off on ya," he said, smiling.

Jane was holding on to him longer than any girl did, well, ever. But he didn't read between the lines. "Ya boy" was so used to mixed signals, his picture was on the Wikipedia page for "Friend Zone." He picked up absolutely zero hints. None. Zilch. Right over his head.

"What does Janey get? Hmm," he rubbed his chin. "Well FIRST of all I won't tag you back. Ya won fair and square after all. But what else should Tag Queen^tm win?"

"Uhh..." Jane knew what she WANTED but she didn't wanna come on too strong. After all, Harriet had REALLY built up the idea of rejection and Jane was NOT looking forward to that. To make it seem like more of a joke, she just started laughing. It was way more awkward than she'd wanted, but Jane wasn't the best judge of awkward so...

"I mean a kiss is traditional L-O-L. We could make out or something... HAHA wouldn't that be w-weird." So smooth. She was probably blushing a LOT, but she was too cold to really tell. Jane was also surprised this conversation had been going so well... Tobias made her feel really comfortable (probably because he was such a dork), and not being able to SEE him or make eye contact certainly didn't hurt.

K-kiss? Alarm bells went off in Tobias's head. KISS KISS KISS SHE SAID KISS WAIT WHAAAAAT. She's probably joking. No way homegirl really wanna kiss. Play it cool. Come off too strong and you'll chase off Janey-Jane for good.

He started laughing with her. A weird, awkward laugh, which came out weirdly both because of the uncomfortable situation and from struggling to stay afloat in the pool. But mostly the awkward moment.

"Kiss? JJ, you ALWAYS know what ta say." He kept up his laughter, kind of expecting her to backtrack, kinda hoping she was lowkey serious.

Maybe it was because the adrenaline had started pumping again, or maybe she was so hopeful that he'd be the first to SERIOUSLY suggest it and take the pressure off of her. But, Jane took that as a green light.

Okay.

She just floated there, treading water and clinging to the side of the pool while they both laughed. Then the laughing died down. Then it was quiet. Jane could feel the blood pumping so thick and hard through her limbs that she was sure the water around her was rippling. Everything felt thick--the air, her throat, every possible thing. There was that anxiety creeping up again. At least this time it was different--this time she was freaking out not because things were bad, but because they were going WAY too well. Something would have to go wrong, right?

Jane did her best to fight through every mocking thought telling her that Tobias would reject her, or that someone would mock her, and finally she just... went for it. She used her free hand to cup Tobias' face and brought him closer. Jane was pretty sure she bumped his nose, and it took a second to kiss him ON THE LIPS since she was so blind without her glasses, but once she felt her lips against his proper...

She didn't want to pull away and look like a jerk! Or have to worry about that rejection. Should she break away and laugh everything off? That might make her look super cool--like kissing was something she did ALL THE TIME with EVERYONE and it was just a joke. But, she didn't want to look like a jerk if he WAS into this as he had implied earlier. OH GOD WHY WAS THIS SO HARD?!

... Also she liked kissin' boys. She had just decided. So letting him make the next move sounded like a pretty good idea.

WAIT WHAT. SHE ACTUALLY DID IT? HOLDTHEPHONEHOLDTHEPHONEWHAAA

The thought of it actually happening never actually occurred to Tobias. Sure, he talked big, but never in his life had he ever actually thought it would happen.

Needless to say, he was stunned as she moved closer to him. He absolutely thought it was a mistake, that she didn't really know his face was there...By the time she bumped his nose, he was convinced it was an accident. But then she actually kissed him. Like, a real kiss. No mistakes about it.

He was so frozen in the moment that he couldn't react. He couldn't move. Heck, he thought his eyes were wide open the entire kiss. (Editors Note: what a nerd)

He wasn't stunned in any sort of bad way. It was more like...awestruck. Like he had to double-check again and again that it really happened. That it wasn't a mistake. That it wasn't some sort of joke.

He didn't say a word. Tobias just stared at her, wide-eyed, completely speechless and red as a tomato.

Oh god.

When that magical hetero moment was over, Jane pulled back expecting (or at least hoping) for a positive reaction and… Tobias freaking out and floating there red as a tomato was NOT positive in her eyes.

Oh.

Golly.

She backed off almost immediately, covering her face with her hands. Jane wasn’t exactly sure what emotion she was portraying, so the air of mystery seemed like a good way to go. “Oh, uh… Haha. Wow that was sure… Funny?” She continued to laugh awkwardly and turned to try (unsuccessfully) to pull herself up out of the pool. “HAHA. And oh darn I just remembered that I have a thing… A sleep thing! That I wanted to do.” When she’d finally crawled out, she started heading back into the house without looking back. “I’ll catch you later… dude?” At the door back into the kitchen, Jane finally turned and shot some very weak finger guns back at ‘ya boi’ Tobias. “Kawabunga!”
